Meteorological Observations comprises a cabinet holding an archive of over 200 found postcards whose content pertains to or mentions the weather. The archive positions these informal notes as scientific data, and attempts to empirically organise the postcards by weather type, which becomes absurd due to the colloquiality of the medium.
Above the archive were two drawers which, when opened, would trigger a minor weather event inside them. The one drawer held 400 watts of daylight glow, while a cool mist would flow from the other.
While “talking about the weather” seems like small talk fodder, the personal and political narratives that run through the cards become quite poignant – especially since the majority of them were written in the 70s and 80s and were collected in South Africa.
