Budget Proposal
The following costs are estimates.
Itinerary and travel:
We are unclear as to what our involvement would be with Kons’ partner institutions / labs in Slovenia. If there is an opportunity to collaborate with them we would of course love to.We are also not sure if we are meant to organise our own exhibition space / have a gallery / museum partnership, but are confident we will be able to organise this.
- Daniel begins working on AI in South Africa
- Miranda begins mechanical aspects of robot in Sweden, with infrastructure available at Linnaeus University and the Kodkollektivet at Videum Science Park.
- Daniel joins Miranda in Sweden where they begin assembling the robot together 1000 Euros (ZA-VXO)
- Daniel and Miranda travel to either Zurich or Slovenia, where they continue working on the robot at the Swiss Mechatronic Art Society’s Mechartlab / or partner institution in Slovenia. Round trip 600 Euros
- Travel to Slovenia to install: 400 Euros
- Installation at Slovenian exhibition space 1 week
- Food, accommodation and transport: 80 eu per person per day = 1120 Euros
Subtotal = 3120 Euros
Phase 1 costs: Robot
These costs relate to the development of a functioning robot
Components
- Multiple experimental chasses, 500 Euros
- CNC or 3d printed materials, 200 Euros
- Additive materials (bio resins, wood etc ) :300 Euros
- Microcontrollers, Servos, 1585 Euros
- 3 x RASPBERRY PI 4 : 168 Euros
- “Arm” and “hand” / gripper : 8 Hitec HS805BB: 280 Euros ebay
- 1500gr black, yellow, natural ABS= 56 Euros orbi-tech
- Pre-fabricated, (poor quality) robotic arm for AI training and mechanical troubleshooting $70 ex shipping (from China)
- 2 x sets of “Legs”: Basing design off of 12 servo quadruped robot design SW-0231MG Digital Std Servo 15kg 0.17s : 980 Euros
- Cameras and sensors, 128 Euros
- 20 x HC-SR04 Ultrasonic Sensors: 80 Euros
- 2 x Raspberry Pi Camera Module v2: 24 Euros
- 2 x Raspberry Pi Camera Module NoIR v2: 24 Euros
- Batteries and charging circuitry, 175 Euros
- 2 x 30Ah Lithium Ion Power Bank: 120 Euros
- Mean Well XLG-200-12A Power Supply for wall-plug/bench testing: 45 Euros
- 2 x Raspberry Pi Power Supply (5V, 2A): 10 Euros
- Miscellaneous hardware and consumables (bolts, glue etc) : 150 Euros
Subtotal = 2497 Euros
Phase 2 costs: In Ovo Fertility detection
We would likely start with a simpler and much cheaper goal, of detecting the fertility of eggs using a method similar to this paper, A Machine Vision System for Detecting Fertile Eggs in the Incubation Industry : https://www.atlantis-press.com/journals/ijcis/25868733/view
This method from 2016, achieves better results than the current state of the art methods, so it provides some value, even if the sex detection goal is beyond the scope of the project.
Components
- Candling apparatus for accurate positioning and digital imaging of egg:
- Light Source: Multiple 6500K LEDs: 5 Euros
- Platform materials: 15 Euros
- Raspberry Pi 4: 35 Euros
- Raspberry Pi Power Supply (5V, 2A): 10 Euros
- Control relays for actuators: 10 Euros
- Actuators for candling: 80 Euros
- 2 x Raspberry Pi Camera Module v2: 24 Euros
- Display Screen for debugging information: 60 Euros
Subtotal = 240 Euros
Phase 3 costs: In Ovo Sexing (Raman Laser Spectroscopy)
Estimates for home made Raman spectrometers, range from 5000 Euros
(http://article.sapub.org/10.5923.j.jlce.20150304.02.html) to 10000 Euros, before including the price of laser, spectrograph and CCD detector, (https://www.spectroscopynow.com/details/ezine/15582b3d5b8/DIY-micro-Raman-Flexible-and-cheap.html)
These DIY units are approximately 1/10th the cost of a commercial unit. It is perhaps unlikely that this apparatus is a viable expense.This phase of the project would likely require
discussion, and/or collaboration with experts, to achieve. The estimate below is in alignment with the lower estimate, as our aim is to make a unit which is as cheap and accessible as possible.
Subtotal = 5000 Euros
Phase 4 costs: Animals
– Human fees:
- Daniel + Miranda = 2 x 2000 Euros
-Chicken Fees:
- Monetarily rescue Battery chickens from farm – presumably could pay the same amount as a dead, de-feathered hen. 80 Euros
- 20kg bag of Chicken feed: +- 700g per week per egg-producing medium-sized hen: 30 Euros
Subtotal = 4110 Euros
GRAND TOTAL BUDGET ESTIMATE = 14 967 Euros
